- WHAT WE DO -
The UNICEF came out with its 258 pages report THE STATE OF THE WORLD’S CHILDREN 2019. This Report comes on the heels of the 14th Global Hunger Index prepared by Welthungerhlife.
In both these Reports, India stands exposed. In the Global Hunger Index (GHI) India is pegged at a rank of 102 (with a score of 30.3 – lower the score the better) among the 117 countries that was mapped for this report.
GHI looks at FOUR indicators to measure hunger.
The UNCEF Report said that 35% of Indian children suffer from stunting due to lack of nutrition. 17% suffer from wasting. 33% are underweight and 2% are overweight.
There are many children from poor households attending free schools who do not have one proper meal a day. These children are trying to get out of poverty in the hope that an education will help them join the wage-earning work force. If we don’t take care of the hunger of these children who are willing to go to school and fortify our workforce, we are running away from our duty to the less fortunate. Hunger is not a curse.
We at SAI ANNA LAXMI FOUNDATION (SALF) are focused on school going children. Since our humble beginnings in 2013-14 we have so far in the last six years supported over 1.2 million hot nutritious meals to deserving children. While continuing to focus on this target group of children, we will now look at what we can do to young mothers and children under five years whose pitiful conditions are the highlights of the latest global reports. We have already made a beginning on this front at Palwal in Haryana.
The Government of India and the various state governments are working hard to fight this threat. We believe that organisations like us can harness the power of several responsible individuals and come together as a group to fight the hunger of these children.
We are now providing Free Grocery Kits to the children of the schools that we support and their respective families.
